Life in Colonial Australia
โ
As seen by one of Victoria’s most significant people
In a a series of quirky and hilarious autobiograhical illustrations, Edward Wilson chronicles his encounters with the various people and events that help him find his feet, living in colonial Australia.
The waterolours in Australia Felix (BlueMere Books, 2022), are almost one hundred and fifty years old!
One of author and illustrator Edward Wilsonโs earliest ambitions was to own his own country, named after him.
Ideally somewhere it never rained, there were no lessons, and he didnโt have to go to bed.
The editor, Alexandria Blaelock, has never wanted her own country, regardless of the weather or having to go
to school, but didnโt want to go to bed either.
“I’ve loved these pictures for a long time,” Alexandria said. “And given the opportunity to digitally clean them up and bring them into circulation, is a dream come true.”
And now they’re available without needing access to the original manuscript.
A unique life story captured in watercolours
In sorrow and joy, good times and bad, Australia Felix is the fish-out-of-water story of one manโs attempt to live the Great Australian Dream in early colonial Melbourne.
In a series of quirky and hilarious autobiograhical illustrations, Edward Wilson chronicles his encounters with the various people and events that help him find his feet, living on the newest frontier down under.
Edward Wilson (1813-1878) was born in the United Kingdom. He emigrated to Australia in 1841, and rose to prominence as the Editor of The Argus newspaper, one of the most respected colonial daily newspapers in the world.
